KWS Group Breeding R&D Methods Genome Research

Genome Research

Genome research currently represents one of the key KWS research activities. The main focus of the research is to clarify the molecular and genetic basis of the economically viable characteristics. The findings are to be implemented mainly in the area of DNA diagnostics, in certain cases the first steps towards transferring individual genes are conceivable.

Key activity is centred on participation in projects relating to the national genome research initiative GABI (Genom-Analyse im Biologischen System Pflanze/Genome Analysis in the Biological System of the Plant).

The scientists apply genome research molecular tools to deal with specific problems and work on transferring the results from GABI projects and other joint research projects into practical applications in breeding.

Genome Analysis in the Biological System of the Plant (GABI)

Industry and commerce, science and politics have joined together to establish the GABI initiative dedicated to carrying out the research of tomorrow. GABI is financed by a public-private partnership comprising the Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the Business Association for Plant Genome Research GABI e.V (WPG) specifically founded for this purpose.

Many KWS scientists are involved in key positions in setting up and carrying out this important and long term joint project. KWS was instrumental in the planning stage in supporting the structuring of GABI with regard to organisation and content. Working together on projects with different partners and having access to new technological developments is what makes KWS’ participation particularly interesting.
